I think I mentioned the same thing ages ago. It is impolite to join a forum and not come in to say hi. We give folk a short time to do this (on a biker forum), then they're binned.
However, we are now almost invitation only :)

Some people are happy just to read. Don't think you could force people to post.

not trying to twist peoples arms to talk
but part of the joining thingy should
be an introduction of the person joining
you welcome folk on to the forum & about
1/3 just dont answer back

Yeah, will agree there. Anything atween 3 to 7 or 9 posts saying welcome, post up etc and some never do ?

We cant make them post up, but every forum I have joined, once I get my details confirmed and a few welcome posts go up, I always say hi, and give a wee bit of info about me and what I drive etc.

We aint looking for your life story, even a wee note saying, hi, thanks for the welcome would be good/start ?

Heres a question;
Does it put any of our more prolific posters off welcoming newbies ?
Just a thought ?

You may have noticed that I never post up on the "welcome" threads, unless the welcomee does.

I've been around forums for years, and seen it all the time, it's not something you can stop.

On one of our more sophisticated forums,a spin off from the main Cougar one, it's invitation only, as a noob, you can barely see anything, then, as you're accepted and post more, if the "board" of original members like you, they vote on whether you can progress to the next level.

I know that prolly wouldn't work around here, but maybe we could make it that the more "juicy" areas of the forum are only accessible once you've managed to get 10 posts ? Just as an encouragement to chat.

Hellooo... I did as well but shoved it in the Highlands section so not seen there

I do lurk more on forums, but that it just because I have a few things on the go. So I check posts and run :p If I "can" contribute something worthwhile I do try.

You guy's should by thankful, how often do you get women to keep quiet!

Well, me and the mrs (TheTigz) are new here and have politely thanked everyone for the welcome, posted up a pic of our car and have tried to engage in conversation on a few threads, but have the feeling we're being ignored.
I could be wrong?

I wouldn't take it personally Rudy, i run the place and everyone ignores me too lol :D

Seriuosly tho, i don't think anyone is ignoring you! It's a funny thing on a forum, people read posts but don't necessarily reply to them if they agree with what they read, they only reply if they disagree with whats been posted.

That and a few of us are really, really shy!!! :o :)

Rudy,

As a relatively new member myself I can see where you are coming from, although I wouldn't go as far as saying ignored.

In the last few months, my interest in hotrods, custom cars etc has come back after many years away. I've never, in my opinion, had a car that would excel in these classes (except a heavily modified Escort RS Turbo a few years back) but I like to be there with the buzz and with like minded people.

What brought me back into the 'scene' was purchasing a PT Cruiser. OK, from what I have read elsewhere, and I don't mean here, there are some hot rod owners that don't have time for PT owners. Yes it's a modern car but it looks 'old' and will be my only hotrod/custom for the next few years. I intend (if my wife lets me) to do it 'old school' as much as possible. Chrome wheels (because I can't get Cobra SupaSlots), flames, lowered and it already has the 'jacked up' look at the back (especially when I slam on the brakes). I used to dream of having a sit up'n'beg Pop just like that.

I first bumped into one of the members here, badgersb, at Louden Castle a few months back. If it hadn't been for meeting him, I would probably never have joined the forum (yes, it's you to blame) as I had been lurking for a month or so before that. I went through the 'welcome' process just like yourself and posted a bit about myself and some history about my interest in cars (which reminds me I still haven't found the pictures from the early Custom Car Mag show in edinburgh).

Since then I managed to get to Blackford, where once again I spoke to badgersb and for the fist time met GTODave. I will be going to the Kyle run/show on the Sunday and hope to meet or be introdued to more of the members from here.

Posting in any forum can be a strange thing. I have been involved in running and using internet forums since way back... (before I care to admit) and there has, and probably always will be, other influences that are highlighted when new members join. Like Andy said above, many people will not reply to a message unless they disagree, it's not that they don't want to reply it's just that they don't have anything to add. New members on the other hand may be reluctant to post for fear that their post will upset someone, or have wrong information etc., and they wont fit in or be looked upon as being stupid.

What I have noticed about this forum, and please don't take this the wrong way people, is that a lot of the regular posters here have known each other for a long time. I may even have known one or two of them from the late 80's when I went to the Second City Cruiser meetings in Glasgow (but due to too many things happening between then and now I keep having craft moments (Can't Remember A F**king Thing)), so sorry to all who I may have known and have not acknowledged. As a newbie here you will notice that the members sometimes speak to each other through the forum discussing things that other members don't know about, and at times it may seem that newbies don't fit in, but from my experience if you do post on a thread, whether it's good, bad or ugly (monkey frog video comes to mind) nobody will rip you to shreds if you are wrong (well they haven't done it to me yet).

What I did was sit back, relax, join the banter. Add my tuppence when I could and go along for the ride when I can't.

Enjoy your time here and I am sure everything will come together sooner of later.

I agree it does seem that way Geo, but a lot of the friendships on here have been formed through the forum, and that's one of the nice things about it. There are only a few members active on here that i knew before i started up the forum, all the rest have become friends through here. It's kind of an accident that i ended up running the forum at all actually, as i didn't really know many people in the hot rod/american car scene when i started it, i started it in conjunction with a friend who was trying to inject some life into the scene.

Just go crazy on the shout box and you'll fit in fine. I've only been a member for 2 months and try to make as many meets as possible and that really does make a huge difference! People feel more comfortable taking the piss out of people they know aren't offended by it which you can judge face to face!! Don't think anyone is deliberately ignored, except maybe Stubee but that's because his jokes are awful!

Dont think anyone gets ignored :( although I feel like I've known most of the regular posters all my life the truth is with the exception of Superbeat and SHMustang, I met all of them through this forum, I think the difference is that we "The regular posters" have all met in person and got drunk together at one time or another and meet up at least a couple of times a month to go cruising. I've only been on here a couple of years but have made more friends in that time than the rest of my life.

I love this forum:cool:;):D

Nobody's being ignored, but what you'll find is that many of our members are "of a certain age", and are a bit frightened by this "new techology".

If it's not got steam coming out of it, and making cartoon type industrial noises, they're phobic about it. :D

Personally I don't post on a thread unless I can contribute something to it, or unless my innuendo alarm goes off. :D

It's only if you turn up to an event and we ignore you that you should worry. ;)

And you are probably right, I've known many of the folks on here for 5 years or so, so we are a group of friends, but i'm making new friends all the time thru this place. :D

I've only been a member of this forum since Feb 2010 and I can honestly say it was one of the best things I have ever done getting involved. Yes it was difficult at first because people have known each other for years and have become firm friends.

BUT - persistence and the ability to talk for the world has held me in good stead, along with trying to go to as many meets, shows and cruises as possible.

I am now 'ignored' for the fun of it - my crowning glory being I now have my very own nickname - thank you Mr Stubee Lovecock Esquire! I have made some fantastic friends and met some really, REALLY interesting people  :D

Stick with it and join in as you feel comfortable - we don't bite and you'll feel part of the family soon enough !!!

I think to be fair a lot of you do stay in the same neck of the woods, so you guys tend to be able meet more often. But don't get me wrong i feel i've made good friends in the one week i spend with you guys at Kyle. :D
