View Full Version : Club histories
Anyone care to post up the history of some of the Scottish clubs.
I know a little about the Amercan car clubs. Usually it all starts well and then the toys get tossed from the pram and you go from one club with 20 members to three clubs with 4 members ....

Various incarnations of the Fife County Cruisers...
I was in the Almond Valley American car club back in 1986, when Ian Houston, John Lyle, Jimmy Purdie, Techy, Richard and Eleanor were in it. Dave (GTODave) came along not much after that as well.
Then the young uns thought the old farts were old farts and left to start the Ill-Eagles and the AVACC kind of fell by the wayside and apart.
Started the American Auto Club regional branch over on the west coast in the mid nineties and that lasted until Harry Tune split with the AAC and started the AACI so the meetings broke up into an AAC and an AACI.
Tried at various times to restart it over the years but to no avail.
Conclusion:- clubs don't work in Scotland as we are just to bloody minded.
Davie,
Remember this ?
I can see your LeMans and behind it my GS455.
Dave Perry's black TransAm, behind it Scott Boyd's Mustang Cobra and the guys who came with the RHD Mercury Granada and Marquis and Ian Houston's Firebird.
Then at the back Techy's Plymouth police car, Ian's blue TransAm, John Lyle's pink Cadillac and Steve Gibson's Pinto.
Andy Tainsh was there as well in the Formula 400 when it was still green.
This was the Bridge to Bridge Run organised by the Almond Valley American Car Club from the Forth Road Bridge up to the Tay Bridge ending at Brought Ferry.

Does anyone remember Street Machine magazine's Cruise for Charity from John O'Groats to Lands End in 1987.
We met up with them at the Forth Road bridge and went, via Livingston to Strathclyde Park.

The three folk in the photo are John Lyle, Richard Bentley and Ian Houston with Ian's Firebird, John's Cadillac and Richard's Camaro at the front. Further back is Jimmy Purdie's 50 Chevrolet and further back still my red GS455 convertible with white top.
I also remember we went to this show. It may have been Blackford or Gelndevon. Nice location and the sun always shone in those days.

Richard's SS396, Ian's Firebird, Dave Perry's original Camaro and my GS.

I remember the John O Groats run. They stopped off in the Wheel Inn in Scone - last time my MM Minor was on the road before I pulled it apart.
As far as club history goes, I started Dundee Street Freaks in 1977 with Ralph Seifert and John Rodgers. Bob Falconer was at the first meeting along with about 6 others. Our first event was Glamis in 1978 - caused some waves, and the last I was involved in was 1981 in Camperdown park (I think we did 3 there). We attended all the Scottish runs, went to the shows down south, and generally had fun. I tried to form a Scottish National Club (kinda a Scottish version of NSRA), we had a few meetings, but there were too many different viewpoints for it to be successful.
Dave Glen (Tess) and friends resurrected the club again, and I think it is still going.
Was great fun at the time, but getting married and having kids kinda gets in the way. I still have my Minor from 1972 - should be finished in 10 years:rolleyes:

You’re never going to forgive me for leaving the AVACC and starting the Ill-Eagles with Scott and Richard are ya :D:p My only problem with the AVACC was the venue, it should have been in a pub not a hotel, it was just to quiet and posh in there, the best nights were always when we went up to Ian Houstons gaff for a coffee, we should have done that every month, ie going to a different club members garage ,like Colin is trying to start up just now. Have to admit I realised shortly after starting the Ill-Eagles that car clubs are hard work as its impossible to please everyone.

Great photos sandy:cool: I remember doing a burnout in that carpark on the bridge to bridge cruise, think Ian Houston has a pic of it on his garage wall, will need to get a copy of it and post it up. Happy days.
Any pics of the Kilmarnock cruises?
Water under the bridge, you back stabber you ... ;)
Remember Gregg's Olds battle cruiser?

Awesome car. I very nearly ended up with it, then he decided to take it to Australia after all, along with his Corvette, Kawasaki triples ... and guns when he emigrated.
If you visit Perth, look him up as he does guided tours either on a Harley or in the Olds.

Yeah remember that Olds, It had a bumper sticker that read, "If I had to explain, you would never understand" I always liked that. Do you have a contact number for Greg as my Niece is heading to Australia on Wednesday for a backpacking holiday?
