View Full Version : The Summer of 1980

This is a complete load of bullsh*t babble, but I’m bored :p
So who can remember the summer of 1980?
I was turning 12 and heading up to high school…….and thought I was the bees knees :D
It was a simpler time back then for sure. There were no mobile phones, no computers, Sony had released the C6 Betamax video recorder, and there were only 4 channels on the TV (5 if you could get Grampian!). If you wanted to find your mates, it usually involved a trek around the streets and hidey holes until you found them. None of this phoning up their mobile and finding out where they were.
The sweets from the ice cream man didn’t come with any health warnings either…….choking hazards or peanut allergy crap….Oh no. We had sweets like Spangles that would shatter in your mouth into 2cm razor sharp shards that could pierce your gum better than any dentists jag! Or Moon Dust that would explode on contact with saliva, and actually cracked my mates filling once when we dared him to empty the whole packet into his mouth and wash it down with Irn Bru! He he…..good times :D
Anyway, most of my weekends were spent either tearing up the streets in my Raleigh Grifter (with the 3 speed twist grip), sneaking into Dalkeith Country Park and making the world’s most dangerous tarzan swing, or chatting away on the CB radio (19..19...copy) lol. My handle was something really lame like Kermit the Frog or summit.
I can remember one Sunday in particular….i got up around 11am. Had some bacon rolls and turned the box on to find Glen Michael’s Cavalcade just finishing. After the break a film started that little did I realise would turn me into a total petrolhead. The film was called “Hot Rod”, and was about some guy that builds and races a hemi blown Willy’s Coupe. The acting and screenplay won’t be winning any awards anytime soon, but the racing and car action was really really cool. The very next day I asked my mum to buy me a car magazine “with hotrods in it”, and she came back with Street Machine. I can remember reading it from cover to cover about 12 times before cutting out every picture and sticking them up on my wall. I’m sure the centre page was a red blown and tubbed Minor which took pride of place above my bed.
Sfunny how certain memories stick in your head eh.
I've actually been scouring the T'internet today and found the film! I'm downloading a copy now if anyone wants one, drop me a PM and i'll post it out. Or feel free to stop by sunny Danderhall for a cuppa if you want to give your motor one last blast before the winter months.
Ok, you can go now......babble over ;)

1st class waffle mate, love it !!
I was 18 back then, passed my driving test and had a mini 1275 gt.
Thought the local hoodlum with the v8 Cortina was a legend !
My mate, who had better off parents had a Datsun240Z, stunning car.
Blythswood Motors had a red Firebird up for sale and that got me hooked. Got my first Yank at 22 years young. A 71 shark nose Camaro, yellow with red flames all up the front !! Loved it !
Went and seen this upcoming new band back then in the Glasgow Apollo called AC/DC. I thought Bon Scott was so cool ! Still do actually !
Never had a Grifter, but had a purple chopper a few years earlier. Oer, I said I had a purple chopper !:D Can you remember MB Bars and the hard licquorice you had to snap to eat it ?
Might drop ya a PM about that film. Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry was a favourite of mine. Memories !!

Jeezo......MB Bars!! Forgot about those :p
And my first car was also a 1974 Mini 1275GT. Mines had the Dunlop Denovo runflat tyres on it.
I bloody trashed that thing too...such a shame. Took the engine out and rebuilt it, had it bored out to 1340, put a mental full race cam in it, a sidedraft Dellorto carb and my dad's mate from Ferranti skimmed the head. I put it all back together and didn't bother with an oil cooler, or running it in. Took it down the bypass and floored it and got it up to 110mph!
But when i reached Asda as the end of the road i'd melted one of the big ends! Sounded like a friggin taxi !! lol
Such a twat

Lol I would have been 14 and was already buying Hot Rod and Custom car, fell in love with Yanks after seeing George Leechs Black and flamed SS Camaro every day on my way to primary school. Remember blackjacks and mojos, mmmooooooooooojooooooooooooooo. Bought my first car at 16, Mk1 Escort black with gold JPS striping and flames on the bonnet, Slot mag wheels, red draylon interior, jack up kit with a red light lighting the back axle, happy days, bought my first yank at 21 same year I got married, paid £200 for it, same car I own today.

Here's the synopsis for that movie.
Hot Rod (1979) (a.k.a. Rebel of the Road) This made-for-TV movie starred Gregg Henry, Grant Goodeve, and Robert Culp. The plot in this one has our hero Brian Addison (Henry) heading to the fictional Munn's Rootbeer Drag Race Nationals held in Lyons, California (the racing scenes were filmed at Fremont, CA).
Addison is driving a 1965 Plymouth that is short on looks but is filled with a fire-breathing 426-Hemi. Meanwhile, papa-Munn (Culp) has the drag races fixed so that his kid, Sonny Munn(Goodeve), will win the races and go on to certain fame-and-fortune. How does he do that? Every competitor that doesn't run a Munn's decal on his car gets harassed by the local corrupt cops, that's how.
Addison immediately develops an adversarial relationship with Sonny Munn who drives a hopped-up 1969 Olds Cutlass. Their first confrontation in a street race results in Addison's Plymouth being destoyed in a crash. Ouch! A sympathetic junkyard owner gives Addison a 1941 Willys if he promises to beat the hated Munn's. The speed-shop owner throws in a 6-71 GMC blower just for kicks, and Brian installs the Hemi engine from the Plymouth into the Willys. Well, alright!
Sonny Munn, with the cops help, then steals the Willys and blows the Hemi by over-revving it! Damn! Brian's only hope is to steal another Hemi engine out of a local police car so that he can continue to race. Lyons, CA apparently is the only place on the planet with Hemi-engined AMC Matador police cars, but don't get sidetracked with details!
Does he eventually defeat Sonny Munn in the Nationals to preserve the honor of good-guys everywhere? Do you have to ask? The story is preposterous, the acting is horrible, and the writing is ridiculuous, but this one is still a must-see!
